Aquatic Exercise Science
We’ve reached September, with five randomized controlled trials from countries in Asia: two from Iran, two from India, and one from Thailand. We also found a qualitative study from Chile on bioethical competencies in the practice of aquatic physical therapy, involving international professionals. One of the RCTs from Iran discussed the effects of aquatic exercises versus a control group (it’s unclear what intervention the control group received) for shoulder impingement syndrome, and the other evaluated the combined effects of aquatic therapy and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in four groups of older patients with knee osteoarthritis. The first of the Indian studies involved chronic Achilles tendinopathy and compared water versus land exercises in overweight women, while the second investigated the effects of aquatic versus land exercises in obese postmenopausal women. What caught our attention was that both studies were published in the same journal, both from the same institution, and both publications used the same photo. The latest RCT, from Thailand, compared the post-training effects of aquatic exercise alone and in combination with cognitive training on cardiovascular fitness and arterial stiffness in older individuals with cognitive impairment.
