Reviews

The volume of published reviews, as well as submissions to leading health journals, has increased exponentially, to say the least, in the last twenty years. Accompanied by this paradigm shift, the way of doing science, whether quantitative or qualitative, has had no choice but to adopt a method of considering and accepting the Review as something systematized (or not) to compose the group of secondary studies.

What was previously used as a preliminary (rational) to a study or an article, in order to fulfill a certain academic obligation, such as a final course paper, monograph, etc., to update oneself on a subject, and for institutional demands (from state and federal councils, specialty associations, ministries, secretariats, among others), became a method, with a specific question and plausible justification. In fact, Descartes, in around 1637, published four essential rules to guide logical reasoning and the search for truth (Discourse on the Method book); among them, “performing careful reviews periodically”.

Any dictionary defines “Review” as viewing, inspecting, or examining a second time or again. Although this formality does not help much in differentiating the types of reviews, which in the past were not systematized and did not allow for estimating effect sizes, Grant & Booth, in 2009, presented 14 types of reviews in their study. Some of the best known in databases and among researchers are: Literature Review, Narrative Review, Critical Review, Integrative Review, Rapid Review, Mapping Review, Scoping Review, Systematic Review, Umbrella Review, and Network Review, among others. These are also mentioned in the text, so I won´t highlight them here (in fact, the translation is a little strange): Review of mixed studies, Overview, Qualitative systematic review, State-of-the-art, and Meta-analysis (which is definitely NOT a review).
