Aquatic Exercise Science
Dear readers, in this issue we present four randomized controlled trials, six systematic reviews, and two case reports. One of the RCTs addressed knee osteoarthritis; another investigated the effect of aquatic occupational therapy for children on the autism spectrum; the third evaluated the impact of combining baths and aquatic exercise versus land-based exercise in patients with chronic low back pain; and finally, the authors assessed the efficacy of an aquatic exercise protocol for patients with grade 1 and 2 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries compared with land-based exercise. Turning to the systematic reviews: the first examined the effects of different interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder; the second explored the effects of aquatic exercise on glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus; the third proposed meta-analyses and meta-regression to quantify the analgesic efficacy of immersion; the fourth, once again, revisited the role of aerobic aquatic exercise in patients with fibromyalgia; the fifth – remarkably the seventeenth on this topic – reviewed aquatic exercise in post-stroke; and finally, a Polish review investigated the effectiveness of Ai Chi in improving balance among older adults. As for the case reports, they addressed clinically relevant issues: one evaluated the safety and feasibility of early aquatic exercise in patients with firearm and/or blast injuries, while the other described aquatic exercise in a 13-year-old boy with a spastic-dyskinetic cerebral palsy phenotype.
