Ciência do Exercício Aquático
Aquatic Exercise Science

Hello, Aqualovers! We have reached the two-year mark of publishing with AquaLibrary, a database dedicated to articles and studies in the fields of aquatic physical therapy and aquatic exercise. In this commemorative edition, we celebrate the milestone of 200 articles published since our launch in August 2024. This edition includes 47 % (n = 7) systematic reviews: the first evaluated the effects of aquatic exercise on fatigue, mobility, physical function, and quality of life in people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; the second investigated the effects of aquatic exercise on blood pressure in patients with peripheral artery disease (the journal link is somewhat unstable; please contact us if you need the article); the third examined the effects of aquatic physical therapy on motor development and social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder; the fourth updated the body of knowledge regarding the efficacy of aquatic exercise in improving balance among stroke survivors; the fifth assessed the effects of aquatic physical therapy – compared to land-based exercise, education, usual care, conventional treatment, or no intervention – on functional performance and gait in patients with knee osteoarthritis; the sixth synthesized available literature on the safety, feasibility, and clinical implementation of aquatic physical therapy for patients on invasive mechanical ventilation; and the seventh analyzed the analgesic effects of aquatic exercise compared to controls and explored the dose-response relationship regarding pain relief. Randomized controlled trials accounted for 26 % (n = 4) of this month’s entries: the first investigated the effects of an aquatic program on sensory outcomes in children aged 7 to 11; the second compared the effects of 12 weeks of land-based physical therapy versus aquatic physical therapy on motor function in individuals with Parkinson’s disease; the third involved the Halliwick concept and aimed to investigate its feasibility, initial effects, and short-term persistence regarding social and motor skills in children with autism spectrum disorder; the fourth examined the effects of a structured 12-week aquatic exercise program on postural alignment and static balance in adult women. A non-randomized controlled trial was also published, investigating whether two aquatic exercise programs produce distinct acute and chronic adaptations in cardiac autonomic control among individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Additionally, there are two cross-sectional studies: one assessed the concurrent validity and agreement of a low-cost accelerometer for cycle-based analysis of deep-water running, using a commercial accelerometer system as a reference; the other identified factors influencing maximum walking speed in water and quantified their relative contributions. Finally, a case series report investigated the safety, feasibility, and preliminary outcomes of aquatic exercise in a group of adolescents with Down syndrome. Please stay tuned, as this service will soon be replaced by a more comprehensive database featuring enhanced functionality and all articles categorized in a single location. Check out the list below:
